By 1527 his name was linked with Juan de Borgoña, his master, and with the Toledo painters Pedro de Cisneros and Francisco de Comontes (d 1565). Correa’s early work (1530–40) shows the direct influence of Borgoña’s models and compositions and a decorative quality reminiscent of Pedro Berruguete. The relationship between Correa’s figures is nevertheless distinct from the balanced schemes used by Borgoña. Paintings of this period include the altarpieces (one in Madrid, priv. col., see Mateo Gomez, 1983) for the Clarissan convent of Griñón, near Madrid; the altarpiece (two panels in situ) in the parish church of Mora, Toledo province; the Guisando Nativity triptych (Madrid, Prado; Toledo, Mus. Santa Cruz); the altarpiece (1537–8; dismantled, in situ) in the church of Meco, near Madrid; and the Virgin with a Bird (Toledo, Colegio Doncellas). Between 1540 and 1550 Correa’s dependence on Borgoña’s style became less marked, and the formal influence of Mannerist paintings from Rome, but without their more profound psychological insight, can be seen in his work.
