Cleavage of the fertilized egg is the beginning of a developmental programme that leads to formation of the blastocyst which, after implantation, gives rise to the embryonic and extraembryonic lineages of the conceptus. Gastrulation results in the formation and segregation of the three germ layers and the establishment of the basic body plan of the developing fetus.
