The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the excessive lengthening in certain phrase-final syllables by Korean learners is foreign accentedness only occurred in reading Chinese or common in reading any foreign languages, and to suggest how Korean speakers would overcome these errors. In this experimental study, we recorded 15 Korean adult speakers’ English readings and analyzed time duration of each syllable comparing to those of a native speaker on Praat. We found that Korean speakers make excessive lengthening on specific syllables comparing to the native speaker. It shows that Korean speakers’ make ‘phrase-final lengthening’ frequently because of ‘foreign accentedness’ in English reading just as in Mandarin Chinese reading. We suppose Korean speakers’ ‘phrase- final lengthening’ error in Chinese reading would be reduced by applying meta language, namely English reading.
