The purpose of this study was to verify the validation of body mass index (BMI), estimated by self-reported weight and height, can be used as a useful method for obesity determination of young males and females with physical disabilities. Total 240 middle or high school students were recruited. Subjects were classified into one of two groups: either physically disabled group (PD, n=120) or non-disabled group (ND, n=120). Subjects in PD were recruited from 6 middle schools and 7 high schools that operate the specialized classes only for disabled students, as well as 1 special school, and subjects in ND were recruited from 2 general middle schools and 2 general high schools. Two subjects were eliminated from data collection due to the difficulties for understanding of the survey. BMI was estimated by using the data obtained from self-reported and the direct measurement. Data obtained from this study was analyzed using correlation and t-test, and statistical significance was set at α=.05. Females students in PD were revealed a significantly lower body weight when self-reported body weight and height used. It was shown a very high positive correlation for both genders as well as both groups in body weight, height, and BMI between values collected from self-reported and values collected from direct measurement. Whereas values obtained from self-reported height were significantly higher for both genders, values of body weight were only significantly lower for both genders in ND. Furthermore, BMI was also shown a significant lower values in females only (not in males) in ND. In addition, subjects in ND were shown a significantly higher difference values than in PD. There was a practical limitation to make general conclusions from this study due to the small number of subjects were recruited and not enough types of disabilities were included. Better outcome could be drawn if the survey includes the larger number of subjects and more disabled type of subjects can be recruited.
