Born in Uiryeong, Yulsan Jeon Sangmu has been active in the "Cultural Rule" of the Japanese Empire since the late Joseon Dynasty. He was a typical local Confucian and independence activist. His life and literature can be confirmed through his collection of writings 『Yulsanjip(栗山集)』. Among them, the travelogue, 「Seohang-Ilrok(西行日錄)」, is a work that contains the inner world of local Confucian living in the Modern Transition Period. This work records the journey of leaving his hometown Uiryeong in September 1913 and arriving in Andong County, China. The work shows his ideas and perceptions of reality, and his sincerity to protect and preserve the value of Confucianism is well documented. However, the trip was a little disappointing, people laughed at his traditional clothes, and Confucian thinking was not emphasized. This complicated mind was somewhat resolved by meeting old colleagues in Andong, China. Against this background, he also wants to move to China and live there while keeping his beliefs. In short, his work contains both the aspect of traditional travel literature and the specificity of a new Era. In particular, it included new and old social conflicts and the lives of intellectuals who migrated abroad. In other words, his work evokes the need for research on modern travel literature.
