When modern dance was recognized as a new genre in Europe in the beginning of the 20th century, Maud Allan captivated European audiences with her work The Vision of Salome. She had more than 250 performances during the year 1908 and gained an international reputation by means of world tours in the USA, China, India, Egypt and Australia as well as all regions throughout Europe. The purpose of this study is to examine her overall artistic life and discuss her artistic tendencies particularly in The Vision of Salome. Allan`s initial works had the style of ancient Greece as Duncan`s. But through The Vision of Salome, Allan clearly showed her own choreographic characteristics, which have rich dramatic elements. She made the work by being inspired by Oscar Wilde`s play Salome that was at the height of aesthetic expression. By expressing Salome`s decadent and dissolute shape, which was shown in Wilde`s work, in dances, Allan captivated audiences. In Allan`s life, Salome was very meaningful work. Although her life was not smooth, she displayed strong will to sublimate tragic situation of her family through the dance work. In most of her dance works, she got rave reviews by means of her dancers who were excellent in musical understanding and dramatic expressions. In her work, she also showed her artistic characteristics most satisfactorily. The reason why Allan`s arts became popular in Europe, especially in England, was that in her work, her tragic life was reflected and people could feel Orientalism and Cosmopolitanism, which were cultural tendency of those days. It is thought that Allan could succeed because such artistic tendencies were assimilated to her rich musicality and appealing expressions. When we compare her achievements with those of early modern dancers who did activities with Allan in those days, it is clear that she is eligible to be recognized as a modern dancer and she contributed greatly to making the genre of modern dance settle into England, though her achievement was made in a short period of time.
