This study explored the possibilities of improving the vocabulary and developing the creativity of primary school English learners. To do that we analyzed the perception of pictures used in the picture diary of the first-year elementary school students and the creation of meaning between the texts and pictures. As a part of the study, a survey was conducted on 108 first-year elementary school students. During the survey 83.3% of the students said they needed a picture in their diary, and 50.0% of the students said the role of the picture was “a role that showed what was written in detail.” The anticipated readers of the picture diary were teachers and parents. Next, to examine the characteristics of the multimodal texts of the picture diary, the relationship between the text and the picture and the characteristics of the picture were analyzed, using a two-month picture diary written by 17 students. As a result, the relationship between the text and the picture was found to be consistent with agreement (44.2%, addition (25.8%), emphasis (16.5%), and omission (13.5%). Among the general audience and first-person viewpoints, 73.9% of the general audience viewpoints were shown in the figure, and most of the first-person viewpoints were found only in the materials that watched performances. The techniques used for the pictures were diverse, including characters (writing names, writing letters , speech bubble), screen composition (the division of spaces), and noncharacter symbols (the animation effect). Based on those results, it was confirmed that the picture diary was important as the first step for the multimodal text. This may be the basis for various multimodal texts that students must learn and produce. It was suggested that first-year elementary school students also needed to pay attention to the methods of expression as writers, when producing multimodal texts, and that educational contents for the picture diary instructions need to be strengthened to cultivate multimodal literacy.
