This study examines the aspects and meaning of Daoism as represented in the classic novels, Imhwa Jongyon and Son Ch'onsa Yongirok. The two novels grasped an image of official Daoism which has a reciprocal relationship with Royal house: Emperors establishes Daoist temples and the Daoist immortals and the Celestial Masters work for Royal house. In these two novels, Daoism is characterized by its close association with the royal family. The characteristics of Daoism reflected in the two novels have significance in both aspects of the narrative and social dimension. On the one hand, Daoism helps to maintain the dominant system of Confucianism in the overall narrative of both novels. But it is noteworthy that Daoism cracks in the Confucian ideology. In this point, Daoism gives a tension to the dominant social order, and the tension is amplified because the Daoism in the two novels is an officially admitted religion by Royal Edict. On the other hand, the characteristics of Daoism in the two novels are related to the socio-cultural climate in which Daoism developed in Korea. Before the Daoist institution (Sogyokso) was removed from the Royal Palace in the mid-Choson period, the official Daoism has played an essential role in practicing rituals for the Royal family. After the decline of the official Daoism, the cult of Kwan U/Guan Yu has established itself as a new Daoist culture in the late Choson period. The close relationship between Choson society and Daoist culture is significant as the social background of reading these two novels.
