This study examined the mediating effect of rumination and smartphone usage types in the relationship between fear of missing out and smartphone over dependence. To verify this, an online survey was conducted on perceived fear of missing out scale (k-FoMO), Korean Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (K-RTSQ), smartphone addiction self-diagnosis scale for adults, Smartphone usage types Scale for adult 20s and 30 years of age and results collected were analyzed using SPSS 21 and SPSS Process Marco 3.5.The results of this study are as follows. First, fear of missing out had a significant effect on smartphone overdependence. Second, fear of missing out affects smartphone overdependence by mediating rumination. Third, according tothe subtype of smartphone usage, it was found that fear of missing out and rumination showed differential mediating effects in the path leading to smartphone dependence. Specifically, the social use of smartphones did not show a significant mediating effect on the path leading to the fear of missing out andthe rumination of the smartphone overdependence, whereas the non-social use of the smartphone showed the fear of missing out and the rumination of the smartphone. It was found to show a significant mediating effect in the pathway to overdependence. The results of this study suggest a differential effect of smartphone useageon adult smartphone overdependence, and based on this, discriminatory effectsaccording to smartphone usage pattern as well as smartphone usage time in thetreatment of smartphone overdependence indicates the need for intervention. Additionally, the significance and limitations of this study were discussed.
