The cultural industry carries the ideological and cultural connotations of the country, with dramas and films as an important part of China's cultural industry. In order to enhance the overall strength and competitiveness of Chinese films, the Notice on Economic Policies to Support the Development of the Film Industry was promulgated in 2014. With the promotion and support of national policies, China's drama and film industries have become interconnected, and a number of well-received film and television works adapted by dramas have emerged, blazing a new trail for the local development of Chinese films. Films adapted by dramas have been expanding in the domestic film market, registering a good momentum. However, due to the lack of theoretical guidance and experience from successful works, films adapted by dramas are still at a competitive disadvantage. The market environment for films adapted by dramas needs to be improved. Problems include the lack of extension of the industrial chain, and the single type of adaptation subjects. Moreover, there is still considerable room for enhancing the quality of the work and the transmedia storytelling ability during the transformation of the two forms. The inadequacy of these internal and external factors has led to the lack of narrative ability in script adaptation, tendency of commercial attributes, immature development of industrial chain, differences in the orientation of dramas and films, and limited expansion of audience in the mainstream film market. It is an urgent task to reasonably analyse the competitiveness of current films adapted by dramas and their position in the film industry, to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to formulate a strategy to enhance the transformation of Chinese films adapted by dramas. Based on this research background, this research adopts the methods of literature analysis, case research, comparative analysis and questionnaire survey to explore the strategy of the transformation of Chinese films adapted by dramas. It provides a set of systematic, concrete and operable paths and methods for the long-term development of Chinese films adapted by dramas. Firstly, this research defines the relevant theoretical concepts of films adapted by dramas, discusses the basic difference between films adapted by dramas and dramas, and carries out a multi-dimensional exploration of films adapted by dramas, so as to lay a foundation for the constant improvement of the research on the transformation strategy of films adapted by dramas. Secondly, this research reviews the development history and characteristics of Chinese films adapted by dramas. At present, Chinese films adapted by dramas are in the stage of revival and development. At this stage, films adapted by dramas also show unique advantages such as the theme specificity of the adapted film, the brand effect of the professional team and the diversification of film cooperation. Thirdly, based on the transmedia storytelling theory, this research selects two representative films adapted by dramas, Goodbye Mr. Loser and Mr. Donkey as case studies, and adopts questionnaire survey and comparative analysis to explore the genre characteristics of films adapted by dramas, the characteristics of the targeted audience, the market performance and environment, and the marketing strategy, so as to analyze the shortcomings of the transformation of films adapted by dramas. For example, the shortcomings include the singular theme of the adapted film, and the lack of innovation in the script. Moreover, the economic demand of the adapted film is higher than the cultural demand, the development of the IP industry chain is immature, and the expansion of the targeted audience is limited. This research also provides reference and quantitative basis for the integration, innovative development, and policy formulation of films adapted by dramas. Finally, based on the development of the film industry, the research analyses the existing problems and causes of the transformation of Chinese films adapted by dramas, and puts forward the strategies of improving the transformation of Chinese films adapted by dramas in light of the actual needs of development. It is advised to adopt the transmedia storytelling theory to optimize the creation of scripts of films adapted by dramas, and expanding the types of themes. Efforts should be made to improve the production system of films adapted by dramas, and promote the development of the industrial chain of films adapted by dramas. Measures should be implemented to explore the marketing strategies to cater to the demand of consumers and expand the marketing channels. It is suggested to transcend the difference in the orientation of dramas and films, and enhance the cultural value of films adapted by dramas. It is important to adopt the method of modern communication to advance the integration of the industry of films adapted by dramas, promote the expansion of the emerging market, and formulate strategies for enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese films adapted by dramas, thus promoting their sustainable and sound development.
