_ AbstractA Study on the Extraction of Philographic Elements Based on Seven Emotions of Toegye in Korean PhilosophyKim Jae-hyungMajor in Visual Design, Department of Communication Design,Graduate School of Dankook UniversityAdvisor: Professor Jung Gye-munOf living things on earth, humankind is the only differentiated from others, because they can enjoy thinking, musing and reasoning. The fact that the humankind muses means that they reason. In other words, humans continue to think of and deliberate on something, they work minds through mind images or knowledge, and they use certain concepts, ability of judgment or reasoning in enabling the reason to conduct intuitive, analytic and intensive workings. In this respect, human thinking is connected with the philosophical and psychological context. In addition, the humanity can, through thinking and meditation, embody concepts in imagination, and conduct the activity of molding which gives form to the concept by borrowing certain material. Humans can, through the molding activity, conduct artistic creation in diverse shapes, and design specific shapes to help the convenient life so that they have achieved today’s civilizations in the long history. They thus have been able to create concepts by thinking - such as physical, psychological, visual, non-visual, abstract and fanciful parts – into forms and colors. This is the human conscious activity that satisfies the idealism, demand, and purpose of human life, offering the absolute life for the better life. In other words, the fundamental thinking about the human life begins with the philosophy of ideology which asks about the essence of life and seeks the solution. This study is about a philographic study that expresses the great philosophy of humanity not by language but by design. This study seeks to confirm the importance of human thinking, to confirm the possibility of connecting philosophy and design, and to systematically combine molding elements so as to verify if human emotions (Seven Emotions of Toegye) enable communication through design. This means that the visual language can express the emotions – that the character language cannot express – and it plays a role of communication by harmonizing reason and emotion with the aim of the communication function through vision. This study uses the Seven Emotions of Toegye Korean Philosophy as its theoretical background. The philosophical scope is limited to the Seven Emotions of the Four Minds and Seven Emotions of Toegye Philosophy. The reason for adopting only the Seven Emotions is because, differently from the four human minds of human nature, the state of Seven Human Emotions, which changes according to external changes, is explored from the viewpoint of design. The methodology involved the first pre-survey of the expert group awareness to produce the test philographic plan and questionnaire, and the 2nd survey of a general group’s awareness was surveyed. Research issues were classified into three categories: ① The recognition about the possibility of connecting design to philosophy ② The recognition about the possibility of expressing human emotions by design③ The recognition about the possibility of the philographics – which encompasses human emotions – achieving the purpose of communicationThe findings of this study are described below: First, the findings of surveying the recognition about the possibility of connecting design to philosophy indicate: of 411 respondents, 314 affirmatively responded with Agree (222, 54.0%) and Very Much Agree (92, 22.4%), confirming the possibility of connecting philosophy and design. Second, the findings of survey the recognition about the possibility of expressing human emotions by design indicate: of 411 respondents, 314 affirmatively responded with Agree (222, 54.0%) and Very Much Agree (92, 22.4%), confirming the possibility of delivering human emotions through design. Third, the findings of surveying the recognition about the possibility of the philographics – which encompasses human emotions – achieving the purpose of communication indicate: of 411 respondents, 329 (80.1%) affirmatively responded with Agree (221,53.8%) and Very Much Agree (108, 26.3%), confirming the possibility of the philographics playing a role in delivering emotions. Further, the elements of the seven human emotions were extracted in terms of shapes and colors: Joy – smiling lip shapes and yellow; Anger ― pointed long triangle shapes and black and red; Sorrow ― unclear shapes and grey; Fear ― crack and dark grey; Love ― heart shapes and pink; Hatred ― broken heart; Desire ― snake shapes and black. All these elements were found to deliver emotions through universal shapes and colors, and the expert group-proposed plan and the general group’s preferences were found to match each other. This study confirmed that the human emotions (seven emotions) can be expressed philographically by visualizing philosophies, and thus that emotions can be delivered through the expansion of graphics areas and graphics. Further, it was verified that the high-dimension communication of philosophical thinking can be achieved through design. This Study on the Extraction of Philographic Elements in Korean Philosophy offers the possibility that, based on the importance of human philosophical thinking, the simplicity and molding elements of graphics are used so as to deliver philosophical messages, making it possible to make communications so that the graphic design can not only deliver information but also embrace and deliver the human thinking and emotions and philosophical messages. This study is expected to serve as a pre-study on philosophics that expresses and delivers graphics as emotional messages so as to further study philosophics.
