The Wuxingjingji, composed of twenty volumes in ten books that contains the theory of Ming-Li were published in Song Dynasty. The author of the book, Liaozhong Boli (廖中 伯禮) analyzed and tested the classic theories of Ming-Li which he collected. Since he stated the sources of all quotation in his book, Wuxingjingji has a high academic value that reveals the theory of Ming-Li in Song Dynasty. However, the books have disappeared in China during the Ming dynasty. Later the same series of books were found by Yu Guk-Chung (劉國忠) in Korea. As a result of his study on Wuxingjingji that were kept in Korea, Yu Guk-Chung published the First Exploration of Literatures of Ming-Li in the Times of Tang and Song (『唐宋時期命理文獻初探(Dangsongsigi-myeongli-munheon-chotam』) in 2009. Following the publication of his study, Wuxingjingji has been restored and published in China and Taipei as well. In Korea, around ten national, public and civil libraries have Wuxingjingji in their collections. This paper aims to investigate the argument about the arising time of studies on new Ming-Li through Wuxingjingji first. In addition, the following details of the research contain bibliographic examination, issues on authenticity, restoration and publication process of Wuxingjingji in Korea including its significance of restoration. Therefore, it is the purpose of this paper to study historical background, Ming-Li of Wuxingjingji, and its possible influence on the future studies in academia. When Wuxingjingji was published, the Song Dynasty was called 2nd renaissance period and golden age inherited by Contention of a Hundred Schools of Thought in terms of cultural and philosophical advances. The Wuxingjingji was written by Liaozhong in the period when Confucianism experienced the reformative changes and the thought of Wuxing (五行; five elements) was settling down as a common idea in societies. Therefore, It can be assumed that such changes in China was reflected on Wuxingjingji. Since Wuxingjingji has a system similar to encyclopedia, it helps learners to discern it easily. Thus, it could be the appropriate representation of knowledge for learners. Seeing the theory system of Ming-Li of Wuxingjingji, it starts with the sexagenary cycle based on Zhushenjing 『燭神經』, and investigates the three destinies concerning the fortune, destiny, and body as the core way of fortune-telling of Tang and Song Dynasty. In addition, it contains the basic theories such as shensha (神殺)-important means in ancient Ming-Li, the shishen (十神) by the sexagenary cycle and the five elements (Wuxing), and the way to tell the fortune by focusing on the shensha, along with the theories of fortunes such as a decade of fortune (Daewoon) and a year of fortune (Sewoon). The influence of Wuxingjingji on later scholars can be discussed especially in two major parts. First, Wuxingjingji has influenced the thought of Ming-Li. It is considered that the thought of five elements as an important concept connecting heavenly principles with all myriad things had an influence on a change in the Confucianism and the thought of Ming-Li of Song Dynasty. With the change of the Confucian thought, Wuji (無極), the concept of metaphysical principle based on the philosophy of the Book of Changes (『周易』) and the Doctrine of the Mean (『中庸』) was introduced to the Confucian cosmology. With the addition of the concept Wuji, established cosmology has morphed into the one based on the vertical system of theory derived from Taiji (太極). Second, Wuxingjingji has influenced on the history of Ming-Li. Wuxingjingji was introduced by Neo-Confucian scholars in the late Goryeo Dynasty of 12 to 13th century when the exchange of people, materials and culture with China were vigorous. Such introduced studies on the Ming-Li were possessed only by the ruling and the intelligent class, and later were assumed to be gradually utilized by the civilians. At that time, classical theories of Ming-Li such as five elements and various theories of shensha and new theories of Ming-Li, which arose in the late Song Dynasty, have coexisted and have been developed until the Ming Dynasty. It can be assumed indirectly that the change in thoughts in which the exegetical studies of the Tang Dynasty was converted into the Neo-Confucianism of Song Dynasty had influenced on the arising of the new studies of Ming-Li. The new studies on Ming-Li were invented by Xuziping (徐子平). However, there has been continuous debate on the time period when Ziping and his theory were active. Based on the fact that Wanminying (萬民英) of the Ming Dynasty mentioned in ‘Ziping-shuobian(子平說辨)’ of the Sanming-tonghui (『三命通會』) that Xuziping was a person of the Five Dynasties (五代), the period in which Xuziping was active is thought to be in the late Five Dynasties and the early Song Dynasty. However, the foundation that Xuziping is estimated to be a person of the Song Dynasty is that the compiler of the Luoluzi-sanming-xiaoxi-fuzhu (『珞琭子三命消息賦註』) in the Siku Quanshu (『四庫全書』) recorded that ‘Xuziping in Song Dynasty complied.’The answer about the period of the activity of Xuziping and the period of arising of the new theory on Ming-Li can be found in the Wuxingjingji which elucidated the literature citing the classical Ming-Li. If Xuziping was a person of the Five Dynasties, he would have been cited in the Wuxingjingji. Moreover, if there was a newly created theory of Ming-Li at that time, it would have been worth to be cited. Nevertheless, there was no citations regarding Ziping and his new theory of Ming-Li. Therefore, the contention that Xuziping is not a person of the Five Dynasties has sufficient validity. In other words, as the Wuxingjingji was restored, the opinion that Xuziping is a person of the Five Dynasties can be assumed to be an academic fallacy. Furthermore, the study of the Wuxingjingji worked as an opportunity to re-establish the history of the studies on Ming-Li by making accurate the time of arising of the new studies on Ming-Li.
