The Purpose of this thesis is to research the symbols of imagery in Yun Dong-joo's poems. By focusing on Yun Dong-joo's representative works, it analyzes several kinds of symbolic features in his poems, such as the symbolism of contradiction and introspection, humanity and aspiration, freedom and religious transcendence and so forth, and along with the process of analyzing, the aesthetic values of the poet were examined.First of all, the symbolic characteristics of the main imagery were examined, focusing on the conflict and self-reflection of the poetic narrator. Specifically , the images of "liver", "wind", "room", "mirror" and "well" were examined.'liver' was the symbol of conscience and dignity ,'wind' has ambilateral images. On affirmative side, wind means hopes in life or indicates independence of his country and on the negative side, the images in the poems represent the dark reality of the nation or the murky future of the country. In most of his poems, 'room' represents airtight space. 'mirror' and 'well' imply self-cognition and introspection.Secondly, focusing on the compassion and aspiration of the poetic narrator, "sky", "star" and "road" were examined. The image of 'sky' is widely extended to signify the opening world, ideals, and freedom. Symbolic meanings of 'mirror' and 'star' are recollection, loneliness, longing, future and so forth. 'road' implies the agony of life and the forced duty of life.Thirdly, considering that the poet was a christian, the symbolical meanings of freedom and religious transcendency were focused. For this, "dawn", "morning", "cross" and "hometown" were examined. Dawn and morning were defined as the symbols of communication of believers and religious ritual. "Cross" represents the yearning for redemption and skepticism and "hometown" was defined as symbol of the communion with the Origin or the symbol of fearfulness.
