Speech is a product of modern newspapers, and the issue of the birth of speech and the ideology of speech in modern China has always been a matter of concern to researchers in the history of the press. Although China was the first country in the world to have a newspaper, newspaper criticism never appeared in ancient Chinese newspapers, but was first introduced to China by Western missionaries along with a group of modern Chinese newspapers run by foreigners. Xunhuan Ripao was the first Chinese daily newspaper run by Chinese people and was the first newspaper in Chinese history to promote bourgeois reformist ideas. Thus, Xunhuan Ripao is a key in the emergence of the source of speech and speech ideology in modern China. However, very few journalism historians have conducted in-depth studies on the rhetorical ideology of Xunhuan Ripao. In order to complement and improve this historical content, the current study takes the speech fetal movement in modern China and the speech ideology of Xunhuan Ripao as its research objectives, and with speech activities as the main line, explores its speech ideology by tracing the process of speech production, development and evolution in modern China. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the enlightening role of modern newspaper speech in the process of social transformation and development in China in the 19th century (1815-1911). Taking Wang Tao’s Xunhuan Ripao as the center of the study, it also examines the logic of the inner derivation of modern newspaper speech and modern thought on the issue of Chinese modernization, and reveals the unique value of the Xunhuan Ripao in the history of the Chinese press. The thesis contains three parts as the introduction, the main body and the conclusion to sort out and analyze the fetal movement of modern Chinese speech and the evolution of speech thought. The Introduction clarifies the purpose and significance of the study, and provides an overview of the fetal movement of modern Chinese speech and the previous studies of modern Chinese speech thought and Xunhuan Ripao, which lays the foundation for the current study. The main body of the thesis discusses three issues. The first issue is to do research in the modern speech activities of foreigners in China. Through documentary analysis, it finds that Western missionaries and merchants introduced advanced Western concepts and modes of newspaper operation into China for the purpose of spreading religious and commercial interests, which changed Chinese people’s simple perception of the traditional court bulletins. In this regard, the Western missionaries in China played a positive role in promoting the emergence of the newspaper industry in modern China, and changed the world view of the advanced Chinese intellectuals at that time. However, some of Chinese advanced people only accepted Western scientific knowledge, the missionaries’ intention to spread the religion was blocked by the invisible wall of Confucianism. The second issue is concerned with modern thought and modern speech fetal movement. It analyzes the relationship between modern Chinese thought and the modernization of Chinese press through literature review. It examines the revival of the idea of statecraft during Jiaqing (嘉慶) and Daoguang’s reigns (道光年間) at the end of Qing dynasty, and the Westernization Thought that arose after the Opium War and the Reform Movement of 1898 after the Sino-Japanese War of 1895. The first Chinese newspapers began to appear in China under the enlightenment of the bourgeois reformist ideology. These early reformists used the newspapers to criticize the evils of the times and promote the idea of self-improvement. After the Sino-Japanese War of 1895, some of the bourgeois reformists, led by Youwei Kang and Qichao Liang, used the press to promote the Reform Movement of 1898, thus also contributing to the development of the modern political press. The third issue examines the founding and rhetorical ideology of Xunhuan Ripao. Through a documentary survey, the process of the founding of Universal Circulating Herald and the political and social ideology of its speakers are examined. Most of the commentators of Xunhuan Ripao were early reformist thinkers who participated in the Westernization Movement, received both traditional Chinese Confucian education and Western modern thought, and had some world consciousness. Aspiring to the constitutional system of Western capitalism, they knew that the foreign affairs movement was not enough to lead China to become a rich and powerful country, and believed that there must be a change in Chinese political system. However, they could not get rid of the bond of Confucianism. In this part, the content analysis method is used to analyze the“discourses”of Xunhuan Ripao mainly from four aspects: the understanding of internal and external affairs, modern education reform, modern industrial and commercial, agricultural and animal husbandry, and modern political reform. It also investigates the content, the method and the way of reform thoughts of Xunhuan Ripao, and the promoting role of Xunhuan Ripao in the social reform in modern China. The Conclusion discusses the findings and the limitation of the current study.
