César Franck(1822-1890) was an exceptional Romantic composer and musician of the 19th century. Born in Belgium, he studied and worked in France, contributing significantly to the history of French music and being renowned for his innovative and distinctive musical style. Franck's music works encompassed various genres, including orchestral and chamber music, organ pieces, piano pieces, operas, and vocal music. Despite that many of his works may not be widely recognized, "Six Pieces for Grand Organ" is the most well-known among his organ compositions. In addition, he wrote the highly-renowned "Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major" in 1886, which is widely considered as a masterpiece of Romantic music. This significant violin work requires both superb violin performance skills and equally impressive piano accompaniment. While most researchers have delved deeply into this piece from a violin perspective, studies focusing on the piano accompaniment are limited. This study aims to analyze "Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major" from the perspectives of Franck's life experiences, compositional background, compositional techniques, and the musical form of the piece, which focuses especially on the piano accompaniment part. It will assist pianists in better understanding and performing the piano accompaniment part of this work.To begin with, this study provides an overview of Franck's life experience, compositional background, and compositional features, which can help us understand his musical style and influence. Additionally, the structure of the "Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major" is analyzed with a focus on the overall mood, cyclic form, rhythm, melody, composition, harmony, and counterpoint features of the piece, providing crucial context for comprehending the piano accompaniment. Finally, practical and executable piano accompaniment techniques are proposed for correct performance of the "Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major", and the cyclic form, melody progression, composition and harmony structure, as well as changes in the piano accompaniment part are explicitly explained. Understanding the musical elements ensures proper performance and assists the pianists in accompanying Franck's composition more effectively.
