This thesis is about a study that intends to analyze the meaning and content of a ‘garden’ as an imaginary space represented by my work from 2013 to 2017. An artistic activity is not a forced attempt but it is an act that naturally unravels what is inside an individual; the researcher expresses her inner space through her imagination. Sigmund Freud, a psychoanalyst, was able to freely move from reality to imaginary space by expressing the latter in his work. According to Freud, “Art is a bridge between the fantasy world and the real world.”The imaginary space is ornamented with images of nature which were set to provoke the greater sense of catharsis felt through seeing the actual images of nature. By dramatically expressing a sense of psychological stability and removal of anxiety that the researcher experienced through nature in her work; she unconsciously empathizes with them and experiences the intended catharsis through her empathy. In addition, the natural objects in the imaginary space consist of new plants made up of the combination of colors, shapes and formative elements of existing plant images. Decorating a garden with deformed plants can create an individual’s own garden. The garden thus created contains the outlining method of Oriental painting. The margin that can be seen in Oriental paintings is not a space that is vacated vaguely but acts to emphasize the theme, and it also means that the space that is left empty is to be filled with imagination to further expand the space. As a result the part of the garden where the background is omitted leaving the plant to be seen. It is not the narrow space of a garden but the spacious and infinite garden that one can feel through imagination. Moreover, the plants in the garden repeatedly appear in the space which can be seen as a sense of stability that the researcher feels when performing repetitive acts. Not only plants but also a bird appears in the garden, and it represents the researcher herself in the form of a bird existing in nature. While expressing a very personal space in the work the researcher felt alone in her own space and felt the need for a being with whom she could communicate. Such emotions appeared on the screen in the form of another bird, thereby creating a space where the researcher could socialize with others. The use of existing materials and colours seemed insufficient in expressing the imaginative garden that the researcher wanted. Therefore, new attempts were made. First of all, to show that it is an unrealistic space, gouache - which is used in Western painting - was used to create a pastel-coloured tone with high brightness and low saturation. This has resulted in the natural space amplification of a screen, the composition of a garden, the diversity of plant species, and it has expanded the inner world. The fantastic landscapes of the extended gardens were lacking in expression only in colour and composition; therefore, the shiny and three-dimensional objects were added to the work. Through the use of new forms of plants, the use of bright pastel tones, and the use of decorative objects, the researcher was able to create her intended imaginative space. Through such a process the researcher has had the opportunity to summarize the way she visualized the background and the screen that formed the garden imagination in her work. The work that the researcher intends to express is to create a space from which others can feel the catharsis that she felt when she walked around the garden.
