Recently, anti-social behaviour within digital games, especially 'immoral game behaviour' has emerged as an important issue within games. Interests and concerns about immoral gaming behaviour have intensified as competitive online games such as have started becoming popular. For example, the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) genre, which includes is run by playing single rounds, aims for an anonymous competition structure and emphasizes higher levels of competition, unlike the RPG (Role Playing Game) genre. However, these environmental characteristics can cause side effects such as encouraging players to engage in immoral behaviour. The important fact is that immoral gaming behaviour not only influences the fairness of playing the game but also negatively influences the acquisition of positive gaming experiences and has adverse effects on the community. Thus, efforts are urgently needed to prevent the prevalence of immoral gaming behaviour while maintaining fun and genre-relevant characteristics. However, compared to the seriousness of immoral gaming behaviour, research related to this aspect is still at a loose end. 'Immoral Game Behaviour' refers to an immoral act caused by intentionally violating implicit agreements on games rules and the playful nature of the game.' The strands of immoral gaming behaviour divide into two aspects: one of them being disruptive behaviour including the verbal aspect of flaming and the intentional negligence of trolling, and the second which is cheating through the use of illegal programmes. However, the two types of immoral gaming behaviors have mostly been studied individually, despite sufficient possibilities of theoretical integration in terms of sports ethics. In particular, the lack of agreed concepts and the absence of various methodologies served as the main reasons for obstructing the integrated study of immoral game behaviour. In response, the company sought to supplement existing limitations in research and to explore psychological and game-related factors that affect immoral gaming behaviour, namely, destructive gaming behaviour and cheating. In accordance with this goal, we have examined what defines and causes immoral behaviour. Among the various criminological and sociological approaches to deviant behaviour, we focused on the theory of frustration-aggression, which is significant to sports deviant behaviour, as well as Merton's anomie theory. Subsequently, an analysis of the meaning of sports competition and sports deviant behaviour confirmed that immoral gaming behaviour could occur due to the excessive pursuit of victory, revenge and self-improvement. Secondly, through the theory of Game Reasoning by Bredemeier and Shields, ethical characteristics of online gaming behaviour were examined and the concepts of destructive gaming behaviour and cheating were drawn. Bredemeier and Shields have argued by making reference to the inference theory that an exceptional form of moral reasoning occurs in an area separated from the realm of everyday reality, and that a representative example is sports. However, the legitimated regression that occurs in sports-related situations is only valid under the emphasis of playful situations and compliance with rules. Thus, actions that fail to meet the prerequisites (exceptional circumstances) of game reasoning cannot be morally justified. These assumptions of game reasoning can be relevantly applied to the digital gaming realm as well as to sports situations. Here, the paper presents immoral game behaviour into two categories: destructive game behaviour, an exercise of uncontrolled violence, and cheating on the structural characteristics of the game.Thirdly, the prior study was reviewed to identify the influence of game, moral and psychological factors that could affect destructive gaming behaviour. To be specific, competitive motivation, moral identity and the impact of aggression in the game are being examined. Fourthly, the relationship between psychological factors and cheating is being explored questioningly. Unlike destructive gaming behaviour, there is poor quantitative research on cheating in games, meaning that foundational research on cheating needs to be preceded. This paper, therefore, proposes a separate verification model focusing on self-esteem and aggression, referring to the study of cheating in other areas (such as studies, sports, etc.). Finally, this paper comprehensively examines the relationship between immoral gaming behaviour ad moral positioning. Consequently, how moral positioning affects destructive game behaviour and cheating, as well as which variables are relevant to moral positioning has been identified. Based on this information, the paper finally proposes two research models. First, the influence of moral and game factors on destructive gaming behaviour through the destructive game behaviour model was examined. The purpose of the destructive game behaviour model was to reaffirm the influence of the variables reported in prior studies and further verify the influence of moral variables that were not attempted in the field of game research to expand the scope of game behaviour research. Secondly, the cheating model explores the effects of psychological factors on cheating. The purpose of the cheating model was to lay the foundations for sociological research on cheating in games, identifying the impact of self-esteem, aggression and moral positioning. A total of two online surveys were conducted to verify destructive game behaviour models and cheating models. The targets of the survey were recruited through the user community of the leading MOBA game and participants were given mobile gift vouchers as rewards for participation. In addition, each survey was conducted at a 7-month interval, and data from 343 people were obtained from the destructive game behaviour model after eliminating faulty responses and adopted data from 305 people for the cheating model. For analysis, the 'SPSS 22.0' and 'AMOS 22.0' programs were used, the structural equation model was used, and the results were analyzed after the research hypothesis was verified.According to the survey analysis, destructive gaming behaviour was observed to be influenced by all psychological, moral and game factors. While aggression, evil moral positioning and competitive motives show a positive association with destructive game behaviour, internalization of moral identity has shown a negative association. These results support the fact that high competitive motivation can encourage emotional immersion into the competitive structure, leading to destructive game behaviour. In addition, cheating showed significant relevance to the player's aggressiveness, self-esteem and moral positioning. These results mean that people who feel anger easily are more likely to choose cheating as a means of relieving negative feelings. Meanwhile, studies have shown that high self-esteem may aid in suppressing the urge to cheat. It was also revealed that moral positioning showed significant relevance to other psychological and game factors other than self-esteem, and had a significant impact on both destructive game behaviour and cheating. This indicates possibilities for moral positioning to be used as an important variable in game behaviour research. To be specific, aggression, internalization and competitive motivation all showed a positive (+) influence in moral positioning, while internalization has shown a negative (-) influence. On the other hand, there seemed to be no effects on self-esteem.The theoretical and practical implications of this study are as follows. Firstly, this study summarized the characteristics of destructive game behaviour and cheating through the framework of immoral game behaviour. Destructive game behaviour and cheating have each been dealt with individually without theoretical integration despite the commonality of having positive game experiences and violation of rules that undermine fairness. While individual approaches may enhance the understanding of specific behaviours, it is inevitable to obtain an integrated, macroscopic perspective for all-rounded prevention. Thus, for the fundamental prevention and academic approach to negative gaming behaviour, this paper elaborates on the concept of immoral game behaviour based on Bredemeier and Shields' game reasoning theory and various other sports theories.Secondly, the psychological, moral and game-related factors affecting immoral game behaviour were reviewed in multilateral perspectives. In particular, this study sought to expand the intentions in the study of destructive game behaviour by proposing to utilize competitive motivations and moral variables in the analysis of destructive game behaviour. It also sought to lay the stepping stone for further research by identifying the psychological variables and the influence of moral positioning on cheating. Thirdly, it has been confirmed that moral positioning is an important variable for understanding immoral game behaviour. The moral context or the player's preference and immersion on the character may have a profound impact on the interpretations of the actions and events in the game. This is due to the fluid change in an individual's moral perception and judgement of an event according to the given context and clues. Considering this fact, evil moral positioning in the game can go beyond the permitted category of role-playing and create a hostile attitude towards others or the agreed rules. In other words, the overindulgence towards evil characters causes moral disengagement, which may cause individuals to permit acts of blaming or violating rules for their own sake. Fourthly, it can contribute substantially to efforts preventing destructive game behaviour and cheating. This paper found that high competitive motivations have a significant impact on destructive game behaviour. This means that in order to suppress destructive game behaviour, there need to be improvements made to the content such as controlling competitive compensation or introducing non-competitive content in addition to punishments through mechanical detection (detection of foul language and implications of automatic sanctions through AI). In addition, this study may help to prevent game cheating. According to the results of this study, game cheating was significantly affected by self-esteem. In this regard, this paper suggested that game companies develop various indicators to confirm player’s achievements and expand educational programs to inform the positive value of game competition.
