Cations of total dissolved solids in groundwater and seawater are known as additional factors for disinfection byproduct formation. This study focused on the cation effects on the formation of THMs during chlorination. It is generally known that THMs formation is affected by the concentration of chlorine, retention time, and pH. As a result of this study, the higher chlorine concentration, retention time and pH, have been found to form more TTHMs. In addition, In order to prove the effect on the total dissolved solids, comparative evaluations were performed that the total dissolved solids concentration, the cation valence, and the cation period. As the dose of TDS increased, chlorine consumption increased within the reaction time, and less TCM of THMs was formed. This is because the cation of TDS preferentially reacts with specific functional group which acts as an active site for THMs formation, thereby inhibiting THMs formation. In addition, as the ion valence and ion period of the TDS increased, chlorine consumption increased, and less TCM was formed. This can be explained by several reasons. First, because the electronegativity and ionic strength differ depending on the cation type of the total dissolved solids, the specific functional groups and binding forces of natural organic materials are different. The second reason is that when the total dissolved solids are presented, a hydrated shell is formed around the cations of the total dissolved solids, which interferes the reaction with natural organic substances.
