Teacher-student relationship, which can be accidental and temporary but has great effects on educational environment within a classroom, has a very important meaning; teacher-student relationship in actual educational practice can be the center of educational activities. Disciplinary problems occurring between teachers and students in classrooms and schools, including disturbing classes, failing to observe class rules, being offensive, and setting up against authority, may be causes of conflicts and disbelief in teacher-student relationship in keeping pace with students' different values and attitudes from the past and rapidly-changing society and arouse new discussions about disciplinary methods. The purpose of this study is to examine relationship among teachers' disciplinary types perceived by elementary school children, teachers' sympathy abilities, and trust in teachers; for this purpose, the following questions were set. First, what is the general tendency of teachers' disciplinary types perceived by elementary school children, teachers' sympathy abilities, and students' trust in teachers? Second, how are teachers' disciplinary types perceived by elementary school children related to teachers' sympathy abilities? Third, how are teachers' disciplinary types perceived by elementary school children related to trust in teachers? Fourth, how are teachers' sympathy abilities related to trust in teachers? To answer these questions, a research was conducted with 867 fifth- and sixth-graders and 29 homeroom teachers from two elementary schools in Nowon-gu and one in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The research was conducted in five classes of the fifth grade and five of the sixth grade per school in consideration of the number of boys and girls and grade distribution; data from 833 children, with the exception of those giving insincere responses or overlapped ones in more than two types, and 29 teachers were used for the final analysis. Frequency analysis was carried out to investigate general characteristics of students and teachers, along with t-test and one-way ANOVA to examine teachers' disciplinary types and differences in trust in teachers by respondents' general characteristics, the mean and standard deviation to examine the general tendency of teachers' sympathy abilities, and correlation analysis to examine correlation between them, obtaining the following results.First, teachers' disciplinary type most frequently perceived by elementary school children was the democratic type, followed by supporting, despotic, compromising, and noninterventional types; sixth-graders showed more signifiant differences in perception of noninterventional and despotic types than fifth-graders and boys more frequently perceived teachers to be despotic than girls. Fifth-graders showed greater trust in teachers in terms of abilities than sixth-graders; the democratic disciplinary type perceived by elementary school children led to higher trust in teachers and students perceiving the noninterventional type showed lower trust in teachers. Second, as for correlation between teachers' disciplinary types perceived by elementary school children and teachers' sympathy abilities, teachers with democratic and noninterventional disciplinary types showed higher sympathy abilities and those with the despotic disciplinary type showed lower sympathy abilities, with supporting and compromising types showing no significant relationship. Third, there was positive correlation between teachers' sympathy abilities and elementary school children's trust in teachers: the higher sympathy abilities teachers had, the higher reliance students had on them. This study demonstrates that there is significant relationship among teachers' disciplinary types, teachers' sympathy abilities, and students' trust in teachers and suggests that it should be desirable to discipline higher-graders at the primary level by the democratic type emphasizing responsibility for their problematic behavior along with consistent and equal coping and make efforts not to be noninterventional. It is also necessary to conduct further researches on plans for improving sympathy abilities and on teaching methods by disciplinary types in order to improve trust in teachers.
