An Analysis of Factors Affecting Car Sharing Reuse Intention : Based on Hierarchical Component Models Liu, Bo Dept. of Business Administration The Graduate School Kwangwoon University With the recent expansion of rational consumer culture, coupled with advancements in digital technology and urbanization, there has been an increase in consumption through various shared economy platforms. Car-sharing services, introduced in Korea, are among the most notable in terms of growth within the shared economy services, yet consumer complaints and reported damages are also on the rise. This study aims to deeply explore the experiences of consumers using car-sharing services by presenting various sub-dimensions constituting perceived benefits and risks, and examining their impact on the intention to reuse the service. Furthermore, considering the characteristics of car-sharing services where consumers must perform all processes from vehicle reservation to return through a mobile platform without employee intervention, this study also examines the role of the personal characteristic variable 'self-efficacy'. Utilizing the theoretical frameworks of the Net Valence Model and the Value-Based Adoption Model, this study hypothesizes the relationships between perceived benefits, perceived risks, perceived value, and the intention to reuse. Based on previous research on shared automobiles, the perceived benefits of car-sharing services are proposed to consist of economic, hedonic, functional, and environmental dimensions, while perceived risks comprise temporal, financial, social, privacy, and performance dimensions. In this process, perceived benefits/risks are measured as high-order factors, with each concept’s dimensions modeled as formative scales rather than reflective scales. For data collection, an online survey was conducted in January 2023 targeting Korean adults with experience using car-sharing services, and a total of 320 questionnaires were utilized for analysis. Considering the characteristics of this study model, which includes high-order factors measured as formative indicators, hypothesis testing was conducted using PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling). The analysis revealed that when using car-sharing services, consumers perceive benefits in the order of functional, economic, hedonic, and environmental dimensions, and among the five proposed risk dimensions, only social risk was significantly perceived. Further analysis on gender differences showed that men consider functional benefits more important than women and perceive social risk significantly, unlike women. Additionally, in terms of the extent of service experience, the group with less experience significantly recognizes economic benefits and social risk compared to the group with more experience. This study found that the benefits perceived from the service positively impact the service's perceived value and, consequently, the intention to reuse the service. On the other hand, perceived risk did not negatively affect perceived value but had a significant impact on the intention to reuse. That is, perceived risk directly affects the intention to reuse without mediating through perceived value, demonstrating that the NVM is more consistent with the data than the VAM. Lastly, the moderating effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between perceived benefit/risk factors and the intention to reuse was examined but was not statistically significant. However, it was observed that those with high self-efficacy rate the benefits of car-sharing more highly. The results of this study provide practical implications for practitioners in car-sharing service companies. It offers ideas on which benefits to emphasize and which risks to reduce when developing effective communication strategies for maintaining long-term relationships with service customers. Furthermore, finding differences based on gender and usage experience suggests the importance of considering differentiated communication strategies for segmented markets. Finally, this study contributes theoretically by demonstrating the use of hierarchical component models measured as formative indicators. Specifically, this study models perceived benefits and risks as being formed by influencing sub-dimensions, considering that the various dimensions constituting each concept may not be highly correlated. This research method enables the identification of specific benefit and risk factors that influence the intention to use the service and further allows the analysis of their relative impact.
