The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationship between social support, psychological capital, parenting efficacy, and parenting stress among mothers of young children and to examine the mediating effects of psychological capital and parenting efficacy in terms of the relationship between social support and parenting stress among mothers of young children. In this study, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,082 mothers of young children in Henan Province, China, with social support of mothers of young children as the independent variable, psychological capital and parenting efficacy as the mediating variables, and parenting stress of mothers of young children as the dependent variable. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 for descriptive statistical analysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis, and AMOS 24.0 for confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling validation. The main results of this study are as follows: First, in terms of the overall level of each element, social support, psychological capital, and parenting efficacy showed above moderate levels, and the level of parenting stress was at below moderate levels. Second, differences in parenting stress among mothers of young children across demographic variables (age, education, occupation, family type, and monthly household income) show significant differences in parenting stress among mothers of young children by education and monthly household income. The parenting stress of mothers of young children with high school education and below was significantly greater than the parenting stress of mothers of young children with bachelor's degree and above. The higher the education level the lower the parenting stress. Parenting stress was highest among mothers with a monthly household income of 500,000-1,000,000 won and lowest among mothers of children with a monthly household income of 2,000,000 won or more. The higher the monthly family income, the lower the parenting stress. Third, the relationships and effects of social support, psychological capital, parenting efficacy, and parenting stress among mothers of young children were explored. Social support, psychological capital, and parenting efficacy of mothers of young children are all shown to have a static effect on parenting stress. In other words, the more social support mothers have, the more emotional, informational, and instrumental support they can receive from their families or society in parenting, the better it helps mothers to alleviate their parenting stress. Similarly, the higher the psychological capital of mothers, the more psychologically confident they are, the more flexible their mental toughness is, and the more optimistic they are in facing possible parenting difficulties, and the lower the parenting stress of mothers. In addition, the parenting efficacy of mothers of young children reflects parents' perceived ability to fulfill their parenting role. Parents with high parenting efficacy are more confident in their parenting ability, show more positive emotions in the face of parenting challenges, and experience less parenting stress than parents with low parenting efficacy. Of these, the psychological capital of mothers of young children had the highest explanatory power for the effects of parenting stress. Fourth, the relationship between social support for mothers of young children and parenting stress shows that psychological capital has a partial mediating effect. The more social support mothers of young children receive in the process of parenting, the stronger the psychological capital of mothers of young children will be, the more flexible they will be in dealing with and facing the difficulties and challenges of the parenting process, and the lower the parenting stress will be. The social support given to mothers of young children, both in the family and in the society, should be increased continuously to enhance the psychological capital of mothers of young children, which has alleviated the parenting stress of mothers of young children. The psychological capital and parenting efficacy of mothers of young children also play a dual mediating role in the mediating process. As more social support is received by mothers of young children, the psychological capital will also increase, which will make mothers of young children more competent in parenting, and will further reduce parenting stress in the parenting process of mothers of young children. Of interest, the dual mediating effects of psychological capital and parenting efficacy of mothers of young children have the strongest influence on social support and parenting stress. Mothers' positive psychological capital can significantly increase parenting competence, improve their role identity, and reduce parenting stress. The results of this study show that social support for mothers of young children influences important variables of parenting stress, and that psychological capital and parenting efficacy of mothers of young children have mediating effects in the process of social support for mothers of young children influencing parenting stress. In order to reduce the parenting stress of mothers of young children, it is necessary to increase social support for mothers of young children. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on improving the psychological capital and parenting efficacy of mothers of young children, not only in the process of parenting by mothers of young children.
