The present thesis examines whether Korean second language learners of English are able to recognize and utilize prosodic boundaries in syntactic ambiguity resolution. Furthermore, the thesis examines whether the ability to use such information is related to an individual's musical aptitude. Participants listened to temporarily ambiguous early/late closure sentences, each of which had three prosody conditions: cooperating (prosodic boundary coinciding with syntactic boundary), baseline (phonetically neutralized prosodic boundary), and conflicting (prosodic boundary in a syntactically misleading location), and were asked to indicate as quickly as possible whether they had comprehended the sentence or not. The stimuli and manipulation of prosodic boundaries were based on the study of Kjelgaard and Speer (1999), which investigated prosody-syntax interaction on native speakers of English. Gordon's Advanced Measures of Music Audiation (1989) and Brown's cloze test (1980) were administered to assess subject's musical aptitude and L2 proficiency, respectively. Comprehension times and accuracy (the proportion of "Understood" responses to total number of trials) were collected and analyzed in terms of prosody, L2 proficiency, and musical aptitude. The results showed that L2 learners were sensitive to prosodic boundaries, but unable to utilize the information in syntactic processing. No facilitation or interference effect was found in the data. However, subjects showed difficulty especially in baseline structures, which lacked a prominent prosodic boundary within the sentence. Although no significant interaction was found for L2 proficiency, learners in high proficiency group comprehended sentences faster than those in low proficiency group. In addition, music had no positive influence on the use of prosodic boundaries in sentence comprehension. The findings suggest that even though L2 learners have access, they are not yet able to utilize prosodic boundaries to aid their syntactic parsing. Moreover, the prosody-syntax processing requires computations, which are unique to language and are independent from musical aptitude. More work remains to be done for a better understanding of the interaction among music, prosody, and sentence processing.
