This study was conducted to assess skeletal muscle mass with a bioelectrical impedance analyzer, the cardiopulmonary fitness variables through the graded exercise test, and the variables of muscular function through the isokinetic muscle contraction test. The skeletal muscle mass and cardiopulmonary variables obtained through study were assessed to investigate the relationship between the variables of the cardiopulmonary function, and muscular functions of the upper and lower extremities. Based on the muscle mass, the subjects were grouped into either lower muscle mass group (LMM) and high muscle mass group (HMM) based on the medial values of the muscle mass to compare the difference of the cardiopulmonary function, and the upper and lower extremity muscle functions. First, in terms of the correlating relationship analysis between the skeletal muscle mass and the cardiopulmonary function variables, AT, VEmax, and VT showed a significant relationship. In terms of the correlating relationship between the muscle mass and the upper extremity muscle function, the muscle mass had a significant relationship with the isokinetic shoulder joint toque at 60°/sec. Significant relationships were observed between the muscle mass and the variables of the upper extremity muscle function at 120°/sec and 150°/sec. However, significant relationships between the muscle mass and the variables of muscle function were observed only between the muscle mass and extensors. Second, in terms of the effect of muscle mass on the cardiopulmonary variables, the group with greater muscle mass, HMM, had significantly greater Emax, AT and VT in comparison to the group with lesser muscle mass, LMM. Third, in terms of the effect of muscle mass on the variables of the upper isokinetic muscle function, the group with greater muscle mass had various significant tendencies with the flexors and extensors of the upper extremity. Forth, in terms of the effects of muscle mass on the variables of lower extremity isokinetic muscle function, the results of the isokinetic hip muscle extensor/flexor test showed that the extensor of the lower extremity had significantly greater tendency in the group with greater amount of muscle mass. In conclusion, the skeletal muscle mass is related to major markers which affect the cardiopulmonary capacity as well as the muscle functions of the upper body extensors and flexors. However, the significant relationship was only significantly related to the muscle functions of the extensor of the lower extremity. In addition, the amount of muscle mass showed a difference in significance with the major markers of the cardiopulmonary function. Moreover, the muscle mass was only significantly greater in the group with greater muscle mass than the group with lesser muscle mass in the upper and lower muscle function variables which showed significant relationship. Eventually, in order to improve the major markers of the cardiopulmonary function to prevent cardiovascular disease, both the extensors and flexors of the upper extremity and the extensors of the lower extremity should be trained for muscle contractions.
