Antonio Vivaldi opened new horizons for program music with the concerto genre, and is a representative work. is a musical interpretation of sonnets which, while anonymous, are thought to have been written by Vivaldi himself, and foreshadows 19thcentury program music. By combining poetic literature and music, Vivaldi managed to integrate the two artistic genres. The present paper examines , especially the first movement ‘Summer,’ as a work of program music ahead of it's time. ‘Summer’ depicts a negative and destructive sonnet using explicit ‘lyric illustration’ techniques. Such an emphasis is placed on the musical interpretation of poetry that Vivaldi's traditional ritornello form is somewhat compromised. Here, the tutti ritornellos have their emphasis on parading the sonnet, while the solo episodes show off playing technique. Interestingly, the first and last tutti ritornellos, usually taking on the same form, are herein completely different. This is due to the divergent nature of the parts of the sonnet the two tutti ritornellos correspond to. This resulted from an influence exercised on the form of the music by the literature program, and seems to foreshadow program music of the Romantic era.As an example, the last solo episode develops the image of the shepherd's fear of the storm and his sobbing (corresponding to lines 7 to 8 of the sonnet) using delicate articulation and rhythmic, harmonic tremors. From the aspect of compositional technique, the core motif of the ritornello is modified and developed into a variety of forms in subsequent ritornellos, building internal unity and cohesion amid diversity. This is grounds to dispute the claim that Vivaldi's concertos diverge from those of Bach, characterized by a high degree of cohesion and unity. The present paper identifies yet another facet of Vivaldi's through a close analysis of the work as program music, and contributes to additional in-depth interpretation of the work, which is still commonly performed.
