In the present day, apartments are being built everywhere and anywhere without any cultural consideration, emphasizing only economic logic. Villages in harmony with the surrounding nature are gradually disappearing, and are being demolished and dismantled due to environmental destruction, construction of new districts, and speculative property investments. Such a phenomenon has also brought forth the loss of village cultures centered on kinship or regionalism. This study examines transformations in suburban rural villages amid changes in Korean society through the concept of placelessness by observing a consanguineous village in a residential land development district in the city of Gyeongsan in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, South Korea. It looks into the value and significance of the village in the residential land development district in the face of changes that result in the loss of physical places, and explores ways to sustain such villages. The specific development of the discussion is as follows. Through a theoretical understanding of placeness and placelessness, this study seeks to connect between places and cultural heritage based on the notion that placeness is an accumulation of people’s perceptions from the past that is granted new significance and value in the current time. It also discusses the need for a wide-ranging cultural heritage indicator surveys as an alternative to developments that cause artificial interruption of placeness and loss of cultural heritage. In this end, the site of research of this study, is a place where a single lineage has taken residence and dominated for an extended period of time, where their identity is implied and there are places that embody this identity. Hence, the legacy built in this village was studied through social organization and tangible and intangible cultural heritage, such as menhirs. As a rural area on the outskirts of a large city, the conflicts and trade-offs of interests within the village surrounding everyday life following rapid and numerous changes were connected to the concept of placelessness. This study aims to analyze the changes of rural villages in the peripheries of large cities through the concept of placelessness. It focuses on the placeness of development districts with an emphasis on the importance and necessity of history and culture of villages that were established over time. This study is significant in that it proposes various examples of utilizing the aforementioned and examines ways to achieve balanced developments that enables the continuation of local cultural attributes, rather than artificial disconnections.
