Jung Young Lee (1935-1996) is arguably one of the most renowned Korean American theologians of our times who made seminal contributions to the development of the theology of change (易神學) and theology ofmarginality. Lee appreciated and contemplated God, based on the ideas, derived from Eastern philosophies, such as Daoism, Confucianism , and NeoConfucianism and thinkers of modern Asia. He regards the reality of God as “change itself” on the basis of cosmology of Yijing (易經). This study begins with Jung Young Lee’s understanding of divine pathos, and thereafter investigates his foundational thoughts of the ‘changing God,’ before finally looking at the basis on which he recognized marginality and formed his perspective. Lee understood divine pathos as centering on the suffering of God and ‘agape,’ the attribute of Christ, and this forms the basis for the presupposition of a relationship through faith. Lee discussed the ‘passibility of God’within the above-mentioned analytical framework and developed it into his own theory of divine empathy rooted in his perception of changes as found in the Eastern metaphysical ideas. After borrowing it, Lee was equipped to reinterpret the concept of logos in the Gospel of John in the theology of change. Thus, for Lee, divine pathos and divine logos co-exist within a relationship that encompasses both, like the yinyang structure of Taiji. For Lee, the changing God has the traits of marginality, the ‘in-beyond-ness,’ crossing between the two, logos and pathos. On the other hand, the overriding theme of Lee’s theological works is encapsulated in his reassessment and re-definition of the theory of marginality. The concept of marginality is rooted in his own existential experience in North America, and is deeply embedded within his personal experience. In Lee’s framework of analysis, marginality itself is central, and he proposes this idea by integrating his metaphysical thoughts within the matrix of the concept of change of the Eastern philosophy. Marginality represents and reflects not only Lee's identity but also his unique theology. Lee examines the relationship between the margin and the center ingeniously by highlighting the transformative potential of the margin and looking at it as a locus of creativity. Lee employs the Asian Classical theory of change (Yi, 易) to comprehend the disappearance of centrality through theprocess of the “overcoming of marginality by itself.” The notion of change, borrowed from the Yijing enables him to describe Christianity, focusing on the Hebraic understanding of God. Lee’s theology is meaningful to examine how the Korean immigrant (Korean-American) integrated the Eastern and Western ideas to establish his own identity. In this sense, Lee’s theology is profoundly meaningful and serves as an analytical tool to examine how the Korean immigrant organized his own reasoning combining with the eastern and western metaphysical traditions.
