The electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a facial and efficient process of producing hydrogen fuel. The finding of stable and cost-effective catalysts is of significance for improving hydrogen production performance. Transition metal/metal oxides (TM/TMOs) are potential electrocatalysts for the alkaline HER, owing to the synergistic effect of electronic interaction between metal and metal oxide interface, leading to the accelerating HER properties. In addition, transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) were introduced as outstanding candidates that could replace precious materials in electrochemical HER applications. In this thesis, as TM/TMOs; cobalt/cobalt oxides and nickel/nickel oxides-based electrocatalysts were synthesized and evaluated for HER. Firstly, hollow-structural composites of H-Co/Co3O4/C and H-Ni/NiO/C were prepared using a Co-MOF and Ni-MOF hollow architecture, respectively, through a two-step pyrolysis-oxidation process. In this procedure, Co-MOF and Ni-MOF hollow structures were fabricated by the solvothermal method. Next, they were pyrolyzed in N2 gas at 450 °C to form metal nanoparticles embedded in carbon frameworks (H-Co/C and H-Ni/C). After that, H-Co/C and H-Ni/C materials were oxidized in the air to create H-Co/Co3O4/C and H-Ni/NiO/C, respectively. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic were analyzed to confirm the H-Co/Co3O4/C and H-Ni/NiO/C. The HER experiment revealed that the hollow structure of H-Co/Co3O4/C and H-Ni/NiO/C exhibited higher performance than their nonhollow structure. Moreover, the hollow material of H-Co/Co3O4/C outperformed hollow H-Co/C and H-Co3O4/C composites as a catalyst for hydrogen production in alkaline media. Also, H-Ni/NiO/C catalyst gives a very low overpotential of 87 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is better than H-Ni/C and H-NiO/C. These outcomes can be attributed to the synergistic effect of metal/metal oxides and the hollow morphological architecture, which promote the dissociation of HO‒H bonds, recombination of hydrogen intermediates, and efficient electron transfer. The results of this study are auspicious for the fabrication of cost-effective electrode materials for water splitting. In the TMCs section, we introduced a facile and efficient strategy for the fabrication of cobalt diselenides@nitrogen-doped carbon (CoSe2@NC) and nickel diselenides@nitrogen-doped carbon (NiSe2@NC) from N-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which has high surface areas and well-distribution metal nodes. We also reported their application for the electrocatalytic HER. Firstly, we proved the role of N-doped carbon and core-shell structure in improving the activity of CoSe2 for hydrogen production. Secondly, the core-shell structure of NiSe2@NC was synthesized from a nitrogen-rich Ni-based metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor, which was pyrolyzed and selenized at different temperatures. The optimal sample of NiSe2@NC-500 °C only requires a low overvoltage of 161 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in acidic solutions. The outstanding catalytic activity was ascribed to the emerging effect of the core-shell architecture and N-doped carbon materials, which play a significant role in introducing a large number of active centers, imparting good conductivity, and improving the stability of the electrocatalyst. In addition, amorphous molybdenum sulfides/MOFs composites (MoSx/Ni-MOF-74, MoSx/Co-MOF-74) were prepared by hydrothermal method for HER application. These researches proved the role of MOFs in boosting the stability of MoSx for hydrogen production. Notably, the activity of 40%MoSx/Ni-MOF has remained after 60 hours of testing. Furthermore, we provided a novel approach for synthesizing molybdenum sulfides at low temperatures from new precursors (N2H5)2MoS4. The combination of carbon materials significantly enhanced hydrogen production performance. Notably, rGO/MoSx-100 °C exhibited excellent catalytic properties with a low overpotential of 125 mV and a Tafel slope of 48.8 mV dec-1; this was attributed to the enhanced electron transport and electrochemical surface area. This study may open new pathways toward synthesizing energy-conserving transition metal dichalcogenide materials at low temperatures.
