ABSTRACTA Study on the Development of Korean Hip Hop Music- Through the hip-hop survival audition program Show Me The Money-Donghyun LeeDept. of New Media MusicThe Graduate School ofSangmyung University This research examines the origin and later global influence of hip-hop music, focusing on the influence of the genre’s popularization in the Korean market through the popular audition program Show Me the Money. This thesis focuses on the analysis of the domestic hip-hop market in Korea and how the audition program Show Me The Money has affected the music industry. Through researching the history of the Korean hip-hop market, major artists, and changes in pop culture following the success of the program, this thesis will provide insight into the role of Show Me the Money and its impact on Korean hip-hop music and the potential to develop hip-hop music and markets in Korea and the world. It will also analyze changes in the domestic pop culture community since 2012, including key points of success of other programs, changes in the popularity of sub-genres of hip-hop on music charts, and changes in the size of representative hip-hop performances. Through this, the current popularity factors of domestic hip-hop music are analyzed to identify recent trends in the domestic hip-hop market and discuss its current status. There are countless pieces of research on hip-hop music, however, there are not many documents that examine the development process and vision of the Korean hip-hop music market based on observing changes. Therefore, this study aims to define Korean hip-hop, the development process of Korean hip-hop music, and the future direction of Korean Hip Hop artists. The popularity of hip-hop audition programs in Korea has clearly been a major factor in the genre’s development since many of the artists who are well-known to the public through TV programs and large-scale hip-hop performances are previous contestants of Hip Hop audition programs. However, the success of hip-hop audition programs has led to not only the program's instant popularity but also an increase in the public's interest in domestic hip-hop music because many artists have worked to develop and expand the domestic hip-hop market. As can be seen from various data, the popularity and cultural influence of domestic hip-hop music is not a momentary phenomenon but is still rising upwards, and the market is expanding with outstanding new artists and high-quality music. This paper presented four suggestions for the future of Korean hip-hop music. First, audition programs have become one of the most important elements in the music business industry, and as new artists are discovered, the network within the industry expands and new ideas and broad collaboration can greatly contribute to the development of the music industry. Second, underground hip-hop is not a subculture far from the popular music industry, but an important cultural phenomenon that can greatly contribute to the Korean society and cultural development, therefore hip-hop artists are leading acts of changing public perception by addressing social and cultural negative problems and communicating their opinions through music. Third, it is an ideal path for Korean hip-hop artists to develop into a new culture with their own identity by respecting regional cultural differences, producing music that reflects their local colours, and trying to understand and accept hip-hop culture more broadly through various artistic activities and cultural events. Fourth, hip-hop artists and educators must improve the quality of classes through systematic and professional curricula to provide their abilities to students and support systematic education systems on hip-hop for better development and knowledge of hip-hop music with a shorter history than other music genres. Through the above-mentioned four suggestions, the future of Korean hip-hop music can be improved by expanding the Korean hip-hop market through new audition programs, recognizing the importance of Korean underground hip-hop, developing its own artistic identity, and improving the quality of education. This is also a natural phenomenon in the United States, the country of origin of hip-hop music, and provides evidence of the recent market competitiveness of local hip-hop music. Starting with this study, it is hoped that research on domestic hip-hop music, artists, and related phenomena will be continued by many researchers.
