Water and Dreams: An Essay on the Imagination of Matter에서 주장한 “탄생의 물”과 “죽음의 물” 개념을 바탕으로 물의 양가적 상징성에 주목해 볼 것이다.
This paper aims to conduct a detailed analysis of Gatsby‘s narcissism and melancholia, and how they are correlated with the emergence and demise of his ideal ego. Water imagery is widely pervasive in Gatsby's life, especially in terms of birth and death of his ideal ego. Water serves as the birthplace of his ideal ego and functions as a place where Gatsby unleashes his infinite aspirations. However, in the later part of the novel, it transforms into his deathbed, resulting in the watery demise of his ideal ego. This paper analyzes such ambivalent water symbolism associated with Gatsby, based on the concepts of “creative water“ and “dead water“ discussed in Gaston Bachelard‘s Water and Dreams: An Essay on the Imagination of Matter. Meanwhile, Gatsby is compared to two particular figures from Greek mythology: Narcissus and Orpheus. Narcissus, inextricably linked with the concept of narcissism, undergoes a rebirth as an ideal ego by the water and shares conspicuous similarities with narcissist Gatsby. Orpheus also exhibits many similarities with Gatsby in the matter of melancholia caused by object loss and of death on the water. This comparative analysis foregrounds the mechanisms behind Gatsby's narcissism and depression―how they each facilitate the birth and death of his ideal ego. It will be discussed further in Freudian psychoanalytic perspective, especially the concept of narcissism from On Narcissism: An Introduction and that of melancholia from Mourning and Melancholia. Sigmund Freud expounds his views on narcissism that people seek to restore the narcissistic satisfaction of infancy where the object and the self were integrated. Likewise, Gatsby projects his concept of idealized object onto Daisy and tries to integrate with her in order to complete his ideal ego. The embodiment of his ideal ego is thus deeply related to his narcissism. On the other hand, the melancholia Gatsby experiences after the loss of the object(Daisy) results in the death of his ideal ego. One of the major symptoms of melancholia is "identification" which involves a transition of object libido into ego libido. It could lead to the tendency to suicide which makes melancholia fatally dangerous. Despite the intolerable disappointment in the lost object, love still lingers within the self and attributes blame on oneself instead of the lost object. As the aggression toward himself is intensified, Gatsby succumbs to his melancholia that submerges his ideal ego under the watery grave and ends up in the symbolic suicide. The in-depth analysis of Gatsby's narcissism and melancholia in accordance with various symptoms he reveals will provide a comprehensive understanding of arising and collapsing of Gatsby’s ideal ego.
