The space where we dwell is indispensable in our lives, and has its own concept according to the times. Space that refers to a physically empty area is not seen visually, but is formed or defined by the presence and acts of humans, filled with things and relationships. As an essential condition for humans, space has been investigated upon throughout our history, and artists have also interpreted it newly, reflecting their understanding of it in their work. In the past, spatiality was considered in the realm of materials, but in the art of today, it has expanded to the realm of nonmaterial things as it went through the process of pluralization in pursuit of de-materialization and de-formalization. So besides the interpretation of it from a physical view, the concept of space now covers the discussion over its psychological conditions produced by the perception of viewers. The psychological understanding and imagination of it perceived in nonmaterial space allows artists to interpret the space where art is from multilateral perspectives. The discussion over space in art is unfolded centering humans. Due to this, space in art is on the premise of the time and space humans experience, and allows artists to change their access to forming the space of an artwork over time. These days, we can see that interpretation of space has been extending to the invisible space outside an artwork and the space the body experiences, besides physical conditions for the presence of an artwork. In line with the change and expansion in the concept of space, contemporary Jewelry has also been extending to the space beyond its relationship with the body, bringing about changes in the concept of space. Accordingly, contemporary Jewelry has ended up emphasizing its plastic artistry, deviating from its essential and functional role of decorating the body. And this leads to making Jewelry into objects that occupy up to the space surrounding its wearers or taking a space as an independent form that is completely separate from its wearers. On the basis of such expansion in the space of Jewelry, I, researcher of this paper, examined the space in Jewelry through contemporary Jewelry as wearable objects that accept their non-material aspect in the process of their transition to plastic art with contemporaneity. The purpose of the paper is thus to enlarge the meaning and form of Jewelry as wearable objects by exploring multilateral plastic expressions of open space, and the relationship between the body and the space outside Jewelry. For this, the paper looks into the essential concept of space with the philosophical theories of Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu and French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, considering its psychological and mental aspects. Lao-tzu sees empty space as nonmaterial place that is equivalent to existence — not as nothingness that is physically vacant — and explains it as an area of infinite likelihood that is behind visible things. Merleau-Ponty sees invisible space as a third space that the body senses in the relationship between the world and humans. He explains that space plays the role that connects humans and the world in temporality and spatiality that humans experience by their body movements. On the basis of these theories, the paper classifies open space in art into ‘blank space as an infinite potential space,’ ‘interval space as a fluid space,’ and ‘space in experiential mutual relations.’ And it analyzes them in detail, which leads to confirming artistic expressions that are based on multilateral meanings and nature of open space. The space of contemporary Jewelry deviates from the size and function of traditional Jewelry, transforming their forms. The transformed Jewelry is summarized in spatiality that is extended from the body, and in materiality and self-sufficiency that are separated from the body and adopt the form of sculptures. Accordingly, contemporary Jewelry is now recognized as an independent genre in plastic arts, with their artistic expressions realized with various mediums and techniques. This expansion does not only enlarge the category of artistic expressions in Jewelry but also turns over the standardized size and form of traditional Jewelry, which demonstrates that the concept of contemporary Jewelry accepted the space outside the body clearly. And then the paper looks into artistic expressions of open space in contemporary Jewelry and installation sculptures through works by jewelry artist Marjorie Schick and sculptor Fred Sand Back. Schick accepts the space outside the body and expresses a sensuous space through a visual tension in the structure and form of Jewelry. Her work has a contact point with my work that tries to broaden the meaning and plasticity of space in Jewelry by exploring open space. Meanwhile, sculptor Back presents a unique space of a thread sculpture that changes following the viewer’s movement. The works by Back and my works objectified have a similar point in the spatiality and expression styles that are perceived through lines and shadows that change following the viewer’s movement. On the basis of the discussion and analysis mentioned above, I tried to create plasticity of open space in my work, “Refined Difference.” And I tried to reveal multilateral meanings of invisible space through its physical aspect that is found in wearable objects. In the study, open space in art can be interpreted in two concepts. Firstly, as my work shows, open space in art is lines, intervals and borders between lines, or empty spaces inside works. However, it does not siginfy the conflicting relationship between existence and non-existence, or between filling and emptying, but symbolizes complementary relationships in which emptiness makes filling alive and meaningful. Secondly, open space covers an expanded concept of contemporary Jewelry that holds the function and purpose of wearable objects. Accordingly, open space has meaning as objects that exist in the inside and outside space of the body, and furthermore as objects that exist independent from the body. Appreciation of “Refined Difference” begins from perceiving open space. I tried to visualize an open space that appeared by repeated lines. Along with it, I tried to visualize the invisible power of space through the complementary plasticity of lines and open space. And in the plastic expression for it, I made the fusion of two different materials (metal and thread) include invisible strength hidden in the softness of lines. This is on an extension of the interpretation of open space, for which I explored the true meaning inherent in invisible things. Thus, open space, the theme of the paper, can be understood as a concept that does not divide my work into form and content, but expresses both of them simultaneously. That is, open space has a form in which its concept is melted, and a thematic concept. As results, in my work, filling of lines is a process to express open space, and the open space revealed as the form of a gap or an interval re-establishes the existence of lines by revitalizing them again. Furthermore, my jewelry existing on its own outside the body presents open space newly that is expanded from the body, as objects. My work “Refined Difference” expresses open space as a plastic element of art, which leads to realizing itself as a wearable object that exists as an independent artwork. In the paper, I examine open space intensively and present artworks that were created based on the concept and plasticity of open space. I thus expect that this study will be a basis that can be used to enlarge the concept of space expansion in the plasticity of Jewelry and to develop jewelry's artistic expressions further.
