In the past, vocabulary learning was considered to be easy and students were forced to memorize vocabulary, namely, vocabulary learning has done in a passive attitude. But recently, communication ability is considered more and more important factor in learning English so we need to think about more effective vocabulary teaching method. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of vocabulary method using semantic field. It is supposed that university learners participated in the experiment would acquire vocabulary using semantic field than they memorize vocabulary without using that.In this research, 10 university students participated in the experiments for 4 weeks and they were divided into two groups. Experimental group learned TOEIC vocabularies using hyponymy and collocation by semantic field approach, whereas comparison group learned their separate senses of same vocabularies by discrete approach. The results of research are as follows. The students who learned vocabulary through semantic field showed a remarkable and consistent improvement on English ability compared to other students while the other students who learned vocabulary through the traditional way showed inconsistent scores. And also the group who learned words using semantic field showed more interest toward English than compared group, which learned vocabulary through the traditional way. This result was proved through the pre-test and post-test.In conclusion, from the results of this study, learning vocabulary through semantic field enhances students' ability to acquire words. And learning vocabulary through semantic field has a positive effect on students' learning because learning vocabulary using semantic field helps learners to have opportunities to discuss and find out the various sense relations of vocabularies actively. Also semantically related words are meaningful and help facilitate their integration into the learner’s store of lexical knowledge. Therefore, we need to adapt semantic field approach to vocabulary learning class in English education situations.
