As the Korean education faces digital transformation, the purpose of this study is to find out learners' perceptions on metaverse-based English classes and the preferred metaverse class types in order to understand the direction of improvement accordingly. To this end, 87 students in the first and second grades of high school located in Gyeonggi-do were surveyed, and learning satisfaction, learning continuity intention, and preferred metaverse class types were analyzed. Nine of the study subjects were analyzed by conducting in-depth interviews. The summary of the research results according to this is as follows. The first research problem of this study was to find out the learning satisfaction of high school students in English classes using the metaverse. Students' satisfaction on English classes using the metaverse remained at a normal level, and as a result of comparing learning satisfaction according to learners' general characteristics, there was no difference in learning satisfaction according to gender, grade, degree of understanding of the metaverse, and level of English learning. As learning satisfaction in online learning is closely related to learners' motivation for participation and learning transfer, it can be interpreted as an index to measure success or failure in online learning. The second research question of this study was to find out the willingness of high school students to continue learning English classes using the metaverse. The willingness of students to continue English classes using the metaverse was above average. However, it was found that high school students' gender, grade, online English class experience, degree of understanding of the metaverse, and level of English learning did not significantly affect their willingness to continue learning. The intention to continue learning shows the degree to which the learner's purpose and ability are consistent in online learning, and at the same time shows whether online learning was designed and operated to reflect the learner's needs. In an online learning environment such as English classes using the metaverse, the intention to continue learning can be interpreted as an important criterion for evaluating online learning in the future. The third research question of this study was to find out the preferences of high school students for lecture type, experiential type, discussion type, debate type, problem-solving type, and creative type metaverse classes. Students showed a positive tendency to prefer metaverse class types in the following order: experiential, problem-solving, creative, discussion, debate, and lecture. In particular, students who preferred lecture-type metaverse class showed the willingness to experience avatar, continuity, and interoperability among the factors of metaverse-based English class. Aside from the lecture-type, no significant figures were available to the factors affecting the preference for experiential, discussion, problem-solving, and creative metaverse class types.Ultimately, this study believes that in order to improve the quality of English classes using digital media in the future, it is necessary to explore various teaching models and methods using metaverse platform that reflects students' needs and conditions. It is hoped that these results of this study will help revitalize English education using the metaverse and suggest directions of future improvement and development.
