This study aimed to recognize the importance of elementary instrumental music education by comparing and analyzing the instrumental activity areas of Korean traditional music in music textbooks for grades 3-4 of the 2015 revised curriculum. To achieve this purpose, we first analyzed the proportion of instrumental units in the textbooks, and then analyzed the status of instrumental activities by dividing them into instrumental-centered activities and integrated activities with related areas. Finally, we compared and analyzed the instrumental activity areas of Korean traditional music in textbooks. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, I analyzed the proportion of instrumental sections in music textbooks for grades 3-4, and found that the total average proportion of instrumental sections in music textbooks for grade 3 is 54.4 %, and the total average proportion of instrumental sections in music textbooks for grade 4 is 59.4 %. The difference between the highest and lowest percentage of textbooks was 29 % in grade 3 and 36.6 % in grade 4. Since elementary schools use non-nationalized textbooks, there is a need to further narrow the gap in instrumental music content among textbooks so that students' opportunities to learn instrumental activities in music classes are not reduced. Second, when investigating instrumental activities in music textbooks for grades 3-4, the results showed that 33.8 % of the activities in grade 3 music textbooks were instrumental and 66.2 % were integrated with related areas, while 42.2 % of the activities in grade 4 music textbooks were instrumental and 57.8 % were integrated with related areas. In terms of integrated activities, listening and instrumental music were the least represented in both grades, at 5.4 % in grade 3 and 8.6 % in grade 4. Since the "listening" area is one of the most important areas of the 2015 curriculum as well as the 2022 music curriculum, it is necessary to increase the proportion of listening and instrumental activities to ensure that the proportion of learning various instrumental activities is balanced. Third, as a result of analyzing the contents of instrumental music activities by selecting duplicate songs among the Korean traditional songs included in music textbooks for grades 3-4 by each publisher, it can be seen that the most commonly used traditional instruments are rhythmic instruments such as 'sogo' and 'janggu'. Learning rhythm is the most basic learning in music, but it is necessary to include instrumental music activities utilizing various Korean musical instruments that can feel rhythm and harmony together. Through this study, I analyzed music textbooks for elementary school grades 3-4 that are being used in schools and found out the problems that need to be improved and complemented the current status of learning instrumental music activities. I hope that the 2022 revised music textbooks, which will be published in the near future, will recognize the importance of instrumental activities and further narrow the gap in instrumental activity learning among textbooks by publishers, and introduce new and diverse instruments to further enhance students' musicality.
