Although magnetization transfer contrast (MTC) imaging is generally applicable to depict knee joint deterioration, knee disorders are sometimes mis-diagnose do. We employed the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) method to improve the diagnosis of the various knee disorders. The purpose of the study was to develop an enhancement technique to improve physiological and quantitative diagnosis of knee disorders by using color MTR image enhancement and multi-planar reformatting. All MR examinations were performed on a 1.5-T MRI system using fast spin echo (FSE), proton density (PD), gradient echo (GRE), 3-dimensional spoiled gradient (SPGR), and fat-suppressed techniques. The contrast mapped with gray color was not clearly discriminated among the MTC images, which included free water, the macromolecular pool, and changed molecules. Colour image enhancement with the red, green, and blue (RGB) and hue, saturation, and intensity (HIS) model and multi-planar reformatting were developed on the basis of MTR imaging. The intensity histograms visually adjust the image contrast and intensity through an interactive control tool. The profile graph of the MTR imaging effect showed a quantitative measure of the relative decrease in the signal intensity. Investigation of physical change on MTR imaging enables to provide us more insight. MTR images could be useful for rapid assessment of diseases by explaining the unambiguous contrast in MT images of knee-disorder patients.
