The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for the development of an experiential exhibition space at the children’s museum by analyzing children’s play appearances, play characteristics, and the meaning of play experiences among children visitors to the children’s museum within the national museum. To achieve this purpose, a total of 45 observations and 41 interviews were conducted with 55 child visitors at the children’s museum of the national museum from September 9 to September 24, 2022. The collected transcript data underwent analysis and categorization. To enhance validity and minimize errors in data interpretation, four professors and experts in early childhood education, along with three curators from the children’s museum, collaboratively reviewed the data, the data analysis process, and the findings. The study revealed that children's play manifested as both ‘one-time play’ and ‘repeated play.’ Furthermore, the play characteristics exhibited by child visitors encompassed ‘intuitive play,’ ‘imitative play,’ ‘information-receptive play,’ and ‘transformative play.’ Lastly, the play experiences of child visitors conveyed the meanings of both a ‘fun experience’ and an ‘experience leading to growth.’ Based on these findings, the study suggests the imperative for children's museums to flexibly and widely employ the contents and methods of experiential exhibitions, constructing exhibits that facilitate immediate and diverse feedback on children’s responses.
