In this paper, we investigated all of North Korea's ‘Deok’ toponyms and classified them according to the origin, land use, formation and distribution of place names, as a study on morphemes among North Korean geographical names. The total number of ‘Deok’ toponyms in North Korea introduced in the "Encyclopedia of North Korean geography and culture" is about 7,000, and they are concentrated in North and South Hamgyong-Do, Yanggang-Do, and Jagang-Do. On the other hand, it was found to be relatively less distributed in Hwanghae-do, North and South Pyeongan-do, and Gangwon-do. Although some of the ‘Deok’ toponyms are seen in Gangwon-Do in South Korea, they are different from North Korea's virtues in form and gender. Studies have shown that North Korea's ‘Deok’ topography and toponyms date back to the Three Kingdoms period and are closely related to the economic activities and life history of local residents since the Goryeo and Joseon periods. The distribution of the ‘Deok’ topography is concentrated on the coast and river bank where the amount of ground raised by the effect of tectonic movement(tilted block) is large. And it is also concentrated in the Gaema Plateau area, where basalt extrusion caused by volcanic eruption took place on a large scale. By the method of GIS study, we can show the distribution of Deok topography partially, especially the largest Osu-Deok region. Through North Korea's ‘Deok’ toponyms, it is possible to track not only vegetation and soil, but also the use type of ‘Deok’, such as agriculture, livestock, mining, and the manufacture of living-related items such as roof tiles and jars. On ‘Deok’, area located in historical strategic locations, defense facilities such as castles were built since the Goguryeo-Goryeo period. During the Joseon Dynasty, castle and beacon stations, warehouses, village schools, local Confucian schools, and temples were built. Thanks to ‘Deok’ topography, the names of Seongdeok[城德], Yeondeok[煙德], Changdeok[倉德], Seodangdeok[書堂德], Hyanggyodeok[鄕校德], and Jeoldeok[寺德] are remained till now. After the establishment of the communist regime, North Korea relocated lots of villages in the large Deok areas and built collective farms, resulting in new ‘Deok’ toponyms. The case study of changing in the name of "Deok" villages due to group migration is also the subject of this paper as well as GIS study.
