The hybridization of Hill Pigeons (Columba rupestris) with Feral Pigeons (C. livia var. domestica) is a threat to species conservation. This study was conducted in seven inhabiting sites over 6 years between 2015 and 2020 to determine the hybridization status of Hill Pigeons and classify hybrid plumage in the Gyeongnam Province. The cohabitation frequencies of Feral Pigeons within Hill Pigeon colonies appeared to be stable at 56% over the 6 years. For the plumage classification of hybridized Hill Pigeons, the hybrid type was divided into five basic types: wild, black-spotted wild, blue checkered, blue-bar pied, and ash-red. Among them, the wild type was the most abundant, accounting for 76% of the total, followed by the black-spotted wild type (11.2%), blue-checkered type (5.9%), blue-bar pied type (4.8%), and ash-red type (1.6%). The five hybrid types in this study were based on the individuals available for study. Therefore, not all hybrid types observed in the field showed the same characteristics, and more additional phenotypes can be produced depending on the genotype of the Hill Pigeon and the hybrid. Further research is necessary on variation in plumage and genetic variations in hybrids owing to interactions between closely related sister taxa.
