Botryococcu braunii(Bb) has been well known to produce more hydrocarbons than 30-50% of dry-weight, so that many researcher have been trying to use the algae at the level of industry. However, the growth rate of wild type of Bb is extremely slow, making industrial use of the algae difficult. To overcome this, we recently successfully cloned new type of Botryococcu braunii, named Nor223 which shows the doubling time 2.1〜3.5 days of growth rate on the average. In this study, we examined the effect of non-organic ions including phosphate, and of light on growth and hydrocarbon production of newly cloned Bb Nor223 strain.
