We have succeeded in preparing well-defined, concentrated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes tethered on flat substrates and silica particles via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization and studied their tribological properties as well as hydration/dehydration behavior in water as a function of temperature using atomic force microsocpy. The results were discussed from the viewpoint of "concentrated-brush" effects.
