We have prepared a sterically crowding piperidinyl-N-oxyl having spiroheptyl groups at the 2 and 6 positions (N77) and studied the ability of N77 to control the polymerization of styrene (St) and tert-butyl acrylate (t-BA). In the polymerization of St at 90 °C in the presence of N77 well-controlled poly(St) with narrow polydispersity was obtained below 60% conversion. However, above 60% conversion termination of the polymerization was observed. ESR measurements for the polymerization system showed an accumulation of N77 during the polymerization, showing a large excess of N77 generated inhibited the polymerization.
