One of the ethnographic accounts that has proved to be of some considerable significance in anthropology is Lewis H. Morgan's description of Iroquois sociopolitical organization contained in several chapters of Book I: Structore of the League in his League of the Ho-de-no-sau-nee, or Iroquois first published in 1851. How Morgan came to write these chapters and collect the ethnographic data in them - the subject of this article - can be traced in his papers now at the University of Rochester.
