This study has been carried out to conceptualize golf, to explore its history, and to discuss a possibility of finding its academic value in relation to the relevant academic fields in sports studies. Golf is believed to be originated as a sport for the common people from the early 16th century in the east coast of Scotland and it was introduced to Korea by British officials playing in the west coast of Woensan in the 1900s. The concept of this sport can be described that curbed clubs are used to hit a small ball in a course variously constructed with natural field shapes and the winning is decided by the less shots. Furthermore, golf has various academic values including history, philosophy, kinetics, psychology, training, nutrition, education and management. Therefore, a cross-disciplinary trials are needed to promote golf studies based on the academic values and the effort can contribute to found academic identity of golf as well as to set an appropriate navigation for the future golf culture.
