This paper examines health problems in the era of COVID-19 through Buddhist practices centered on early Buddhism and Vipassana Meditation of the Theravada Buddhism, and modern Western mind and body healing programs. According to early Buddhism, health includes physical and mental health. Healing of the mental illness rather than the physical illness was the main goal of the Buddha’s teaching. The Buddha emphasized the teaching that even if the body is ill, the mind should not. There are also suttas that claim that physical ailments were healed just by listening to the methods of meditation or the teachings of the the Seven Factors of Awakening (Pali: satta bojjhaṅgā or satta sambojjhaṅgā). By listening to the teachings of Vipassana meditation and the Seven Factors of Awakening, the mind is purified and physical ailments can be recovered. In modern Theravada Buddhism, Dhamma Therapy is passed down among meditators of Mahashi Vipassana tradition. There are many examples of psychological and physical ailments being cured by the practice of intensive vipassana practice. There is also the case of Goenka's migraine and Dipama's disease treatment. Such a case may be related to the case in which the disease was healed by listening to the Factors of Awakening in the early Buddist scriptures. Modern psychology and medicine have clinically verified the healing effects of various mind and body through mindfulness meditation. Among the benefits of four foundations of mindfulness, the effect of healing the mind and body has been verified by researches of modern psychology and medicine. Recently, there is also a study that mindfulness meditation is effective in reducing the stress of medical staff and patients due to COVID-19. There is also a report highlighting mindfulness meditation for teachers and students in the era of COVID-19. It was confirmed through studies in the early Buddhist scriptures, modern Theravada Buddhism, modern medicine and psychology that vipassana practice can have the effect of mental and physical health. Vipassana practice will be a useful tool for wisely overcoming the COVID-19 era.
