The gospel and ministry being conveyed by a missionary who was sent for the missio Dei affect the results of mission depending on what kind of a missionary he/she is or how the missionary carries out the ministry of the gospel. By the way, an importance of such a missionary is associated with the ‘missionary identity’ that fits the situation of mission fields. And it is noted that the ‘missionary identity’ is an important subject associated with ‘identification’. This ‘missionary identification’ implies all processes in which the missionary who conveys the gospel at the mission field is seeking a focal point with the natives who will listen to the gospel attentively. In this regard, the identification is very important in carrying out the ministry of the gospel in terms of a missionary perspective. It should be noted that such a missionary identification is just the study that is required for the Korean missionaries as well. Korean church first started an overseas mission with Shandong mission, which dispatched missionaries to Shandong, after establishing the Presbyterian Church of Korea and has shown a sustained growth since then. For the Korea mission in the future, however, it is necessary to present a historical study that can be a lesson for right missionary identity and ministry by conducting studies continuously on the Korean missionaries. With these facts in mind, this study investigates the missionary identification of Hyo Won Pang and Ji Il Pang who performed a ministry as the missionary at Shandong in China. In other words, this study discusses an understanding for missionary identification, examines their efforts for missionary identification in linguistic, political and religious-educational spheres, and finally, from these perspective, this study also attempts the missiological evaluation on missionary identification.
