This paper examines how the perspectives of art historians and archaeologists with respect to Athenian pottery have shifted from exploring formative styles and subjects of the vase painting to exploring cultural contexts in relation to their market value and social function. The compilation of contextual information through the pioneering works of John D. Beazley and Edmond Pottier and contemporary debates on the distribution and consumption of Athenian red-figured vases as well as the modus operandi of the workshops of potters and painters in the Classical Greek world has been instrumental in our understanding not only of how the art historical paradigm has evolved in the study of Greek painted pottery but also of the increasing importance of the knowledge base of the social contexts in the history of Greek painted pottery studies.
