The aim of this study was to identify the difference of anthropometric variables (AP) and basal physical fitness (PF) according to playing position, and to present the basal data for player and position selection. Participants were 26 male water players, and divided into 5 groups: goal keeper (GK), center forward (CF), center back (CB), wing driver (WD), and back driver group (BD). As a result, no significance was shown in height among groups. Weight, % body fat, and BMI in CF were significantly higher than other groups (p<.01). Non-dominant side grip strength in CF and back strength in CB and CF were significantly higher than other groups (p<.05). No significance was shown in muscle endurance, muscle power, agility, and flexibility among groups. In conclusion, results in AP were seemed to be characteristics in Korean strategic style, and results in PF were decided to be training adaptation. And it is suggested that policy research to lower an introductory age into water polo should be carried out, and that criteria for player and position selection should be reestablished.
