A CMOS-based neural interface device with on-chip localized optical stimulation capability was proposed and demonstrated. A multifunctional CMOS image sensor with an addressable on-chip electrode array was integrated with a GaInN light emitting diode (LED) array formed on a sapphire substrate. The basic functionality of the device was evaluated, and optical stimulation on ChR2-expressed Neuro-2A cells was successfully performed. A variation of the device with electric neural accessibility is also proposed.
