Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is an efficient and no damage method which can be used in look-ahead detection of various obstacles like large boulders, concrete pile foundations and metal pipes or plates in the construction of slurry balance shield machine tunnels. Based on finite difference time domain method (FDTD), GPR responses were investigated using synthetic forward modellings. Numerical simulations show that obstacles can be identified in images of GPR.
