The Port/Starboard ambiguity has always been an important factor affecting the performance of the line array sonar. This paper proposes a new algorithm for solving The Port/Starboard ambiguity. By using the difference of illusive target azimuth generated by the V-Shaped array's two sub-arrays for the same target, the Hyper Beamforming algorithm, which is a split beam algorithm that makes more efficient use of half beams, can greatly improve the abililty of the Port/Starboard Discrimination, and basically solve the problem of Port/Starboard ambiguity. When the angle of the two subarrays is less than 170°(that is, the deflection is greater than 10°), the condition of the algorithm can be satisfied, and the influence on the array gain is small. In this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the Port/Starboard Discrimination ability of V-shaped array Conventional Beamforming and V-shaped array Hyper Beamforming algorithm. After a test in a simulated situation with typical array distortion, it is proved that the method can be applied to suppress the influence of the distortion on Port/Starboard Discrimination, which indicates that the method has high reliability and has strong significance in engineering practice.
