Laparoscopic surgeons should pass a set of tests on a Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) Trainer device. By using the current FLS Trainer no significant qualitative and quantitative information on the trainee’s performance is measured and recorded electronically. There is an on-going research collaboration between the ECE Department and the Department of Surgery to develop an intelligent box-trainer device which includes sensors and several high definition digital video cameras along with a fuzzy logic-based performance assessment system. This paper reports on the tool-tip tracking and associated assessment aspect of the project. The significance of this research is to create an intelligent performance assessment system that is much more objective than the ones which are currently being used. Using fuzzy logic to capture expert knowledge for performance assessment is a new approach in this area.
